The Regional Health Agency reports a worrying increase in Legionnaires' disease cases in Savoie, where two people over the age of 80 died between June 1st and August 10th. During this period, 41 cases were recorded, including 40 hospitalizations. Thirty-four patients reside in the department, and seven had stayed there, ranging in age from 26 to 91.
Investigations are focused on western Savoie and the Chambéry basin, frequented by 25 patients. Approximately thirty samples have been taken from water systems, cooling towers, and public buildings. The first results are expected around August 17th.
Legionnaires' disease, a lung infection caused by the Legionella bacteria, is transmitted through the inhalation of contaminated water droplets. In the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, 200 to 400 cases are reported each year. The disease results in death in approximately 10% of cases.
