The French government has just published a decree raising the annual cap on medical deductibles, effective October 1st. This cap will increase from €100 to €140, whereas a doubling of the cap had been considered in July before being abandoned.

Each category of deductible—consultations, medications, paramedical services, and medical transport—will now be capped at €70 per year. The decree also provides for an automatic adjustment of these amounts starting in 2028, indexed to inflation.

Health Minister Stéphanie Rist points out that these caps, unchanged for twenty years, are being adjusted "to take inflation into account." She emphasizes that 18 million people remain exempt, including minors, beneficiaries of the supplementary universal health coverage (Complémentaire santé solidaire), and pregnant women.

According to the Ministry, the average impact of the increase will be limited: less than one euro per month for those affected, and approximately two euros for those with long-term illnesses.

This measure comes as the executive seeks to reduce the Social Security deficit, estimated at 21.6 billion euros in 2025 and expected to reach 23.2 billion in 2026.
